/ Zen Suishinryu Goshin Do
Founder SHUSUI KAWAI
< PROFILE >
He is the Master & Founder of the Zen SSR Karate Do Kenseikaikan / Zen SSR Self Defense (Goshin-Do). From a young age, he studied several Martial Arts. However Karate was his favourite.
During his late teen years, he competed in a Karate tournament, which totally changed his life for the worse. One of his opponents died by accident from one of his kicks. He felt guilty, and because it happened at such a young age, he became very depressed and attempted suicide, by jumping off a bridge into the rapids. Luckily, he survived the dangerous fall.
After getting out of the river, he wandered for a few days until he came to "Iga" which is a place in Mie Prefecture, which used to be known as "Ninja Country".
Co-incidentally, he fund a old run-down Ninja Castle called "Momochi Castle", next to the castle was an old Temple called "Shouun Temple". Standing in the temple was a Priest, who gave him some help, and later became his Spiritual Master.
His name was Kato. Under Kato's permission, he stayed on the temple for 1 year, during that time, he practiced Zen & Karate by himself.
One day, Kato went up to him and said, "You really think that you are strong? Follow me!" Young Shusui follows him..... Kato took him to the waterfall. Kato said to Shusui "Why don't you punch the waterfall" and so he did.... Kato then said "So did you beat the water? You couldn't, Right?" Shusui stood there speechless.
Here, Shusui learnt the most meaningful rule of his life, which became the rule of SSR. "You have to live like water. Sometimes it's strong, sometimes it's calm. Nature overpowers everything". Young Shusui stood there with a blank face, but soon agreed after thinking about what the priest had told him.
After his training from Kato, Shusui continued to train hard by himself in the Mountains. Then he realized again, "Water, is a natural source of Energy, no one can beat Water" This is how the name SSR "Suishin Ryu" (Mind & Spirits like Water) was formed.
In his early 20's Shusui joined the Japanese self-defense Force. (Army & Navy). During this time, he endured a lot of physical training.
In his mid 20's, Shusui entered the workforce, and met his wife in the same company that he worked in. Soon after he got married, he had 2 children, and he decided that office work was not for him, and left the company to pursue his dream of starting his own Karate Dojo.
While pursuing his dream, Shusui also was a Private Investigator with his wife, and instructed Fitness on the side.
In his late 20's, out of respect for the priest who saved his life, and the opponent who passed away during the tournament, Shusui decided to become a Zen Buddhist Priest.
SSR has been in operation for over 30 years, Master Shusui has is still busy today, travelling to places like Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland & U.S.A etc. to show the world his SSR Karate & Self Defense.
